UN General Assembly opens amid global conflicts and humanitarian crises

UN General Assembly leaders meet amid ongoing global conflicts and humanitarian crises.

World leaders have gathered at the United Nations in New York for the high-level general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly, taking place amid major international conflicts and humanitarian crises. The general debate runs from September 22 to 26, with an additional session on September 28.

The meeting comes as conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine continue to dominate international attention. Leaders are expected to discuss efforts to reduce violence, protect civilians and address growing humanitarian needs.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his final General Assembly address before leaving office at the end of 2026, called for an end to wars and stronger international cooperation. He also highlighted climate change, humanitarian assistance and the need for global governance of artificial intelligence.

The 81st session is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” With nearly 130 heads of state expected to participate, the gathering provides a major diplomatic forum for discussing conflicts, humanitarian emergencies and other global challenges.

As tensions remain high in several regions, attention will focus on whether diplomatic discussions at the UN can contribute to stronger international cooperation and progress toward peaceful solutions.
